artist statement

My paintings are built up in layers, each a response to what lies beneath, each a mind map of a specific date or state (of being), a continuous process of construction and deconstruction.  Traces of previous layers remain visible to the careful observer, relics of the artistic process that serve as metaphors for the excavation of memory, meaning, and existence.

 

Tangible, tactile paint holds so many possibilities.  My work blurs the line between 2D and 3D, responding to and resolving tensions as they develop, the resulting surface evocative and richly textured.  The finished piece is an archaeological artefact, a palimpsest, a compilation, evolution, evidence, I hope, of progress in ever-striving towards balance, a sense of completeness, of self.

 

My current work focuses on making sense of the frenetic world around me (the superficial, the perceived, the real) through abstraction, reconciling left brain/right brain, creating stories where there is no known narrative.  My paintings provide a place where I can be free to break rules yet explore ways to bring order where there is none, and structure to a world of discord and disharmony, exploring themes of identity, belonging, transitions, and home.
